What is an Advocacy center?
An advocacy center coordinates the professional response to reports of child abuse, sexual assault and family violence. The professionals involved include law enforcement, Child Protection Services, forensic medical, prosecution, advocates and mental health.

What services will the Star Advocacy Center provide?

2.    Host victim and child interviews at our center
3.    Host SANE nurse exams at our center (rape and sexual assault victims exam to collect evidence)
4.    Provide information on resources to victims and their families
5.    Advocate for victims
6.    Train and certify responders (including officers, EMS, deputies, and other agencies) to respond to rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence calls.
7.    Assist victims in court proceedings as an emotional support and help with filling out protective orders paperwork as needed.
8.    Train volunteers to become victim advocates
9.    Provide trainings for school assemblies including preventative for younger ages and dating violence signs for older ages
10.   Provide life coaching and counseling to victims
11.   Host multidisciplinary meetings to help local agencies communicate and work together on cases

Is there a need for an advocacy center in Graham/Greenlee counties?
Yes! Currently officers have to interview victims in the same room they interview the perpetrators. For child victims the agency involved has to drive them to Tucson’s advocacy center where the agency is then charged over $200 per victim.  Plus there is also the cost of gas/mileage and time for the officers, and the child’s parents having to take work off.
According to DES stats, there were approximately 320 child cases through CPS from April 2012 to March 2013 in Graham and Greenlee counties.  Keep in mind only 1 out of every 10 cases get reported, AND this number only reflects cases through CPS where family is involved.  Other cases where family is not involved go through the local police or sheriff’s office. This number does not include adult victims.
